Why Early Behavioural Support Matters
Behaviours of concern in children can leave parents feeling overwhelmed, especially when it goes beyond typical tantrums or defiance. If your child frequently argues, disobeys, or displays aggression, they may be showing signs of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) or Conduct Disorder (CD). These conditions can significantly impact a child’s ability to thrive at home, school, and in social settings.
At Freedom Therapy Services, we offer Psychology services and Behaviour Support for NDIS participants including Early Intervention and Specialist Behaviour Support services to help families manage and support these complex behaviours.
What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)?
Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a childhood behavioural condition marked by chronic disobedience, hostility, and defiance toward authority figures. It affects approximately 1 in 10 children under 12, with boys being diagnosed twice as often as girls.
Key Signs of ODD in Children:
- Frequent temper tantrums and anger outbursts
- Arguing often with parents, teachers, or caregivers
- Defying rules and refusing requests
- Blaming others for their mistakes
- Low self-esteem and frustration tolerance
- Seeming to intentionally annoy or provoke others
ODD is part of a group known as disruptive behaviour disorders, alongside Conduct Disorder (CD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Without learning the appropriate tools, children with ODD may develop more severe behavioural issues.
What is Conduct Disorder (CD)?
Conduct Disorder is more severe than ODD and involves a persistent pattern of aggressive, destructive, or rule-breaking behaviours that violate the rights of others or societal norms.
Typical Behaviours Associated with CD:
- Lying and manipulative behaviours
- Physical or sexual aggression
- Cruelty toward animals or people
- Deliberately starting fires or damaging property
- Repeated stealing or vandalism
These behaviours usually occur over a 6–12-month period and often require psychological and specialist behaviour support, particularly when combined with other developmental or emotional disorders.
Watch Now: TEDx – The Neuropsychology of Conduct Disorders in Children by Kalina Michalska explores emotional empathy in children at risk of psychopathology, such as those with CD or social anxiety.
