Specialist Behaviour Support – Empowering Individuals to Thrive
At Freedom Therapy Services, we understand that behaviours of concern are a form of communication. Every individual is at a different stage in their social-emotional development, particularly individuals with disability, autism, and complex support needs. Through comprehensive assessment, our team works to understand each person’s unique challenges, strengths, and goals. We take a holistic approach, ensuring that parents, caregivers, teachers, support workers, SIL providers, and allied health professionals have the knowledge and strategies needed to create a consistent and supportive environment across home, school, occupational settings, community, and SIL/group home environments.
Through positive, person-centred intervention, we support skill development in the following areas:
- Challenging behaviour reduction – Teaching positive alternatives to improve emotional regulation
- Language and communication skills – Helping individuals express their needs and connect with others
- Social skills – Building confidence in friendships, group settings, and social interactions
- Leisure and play skills – Encouraging meaningful engagement in hobbies and recreation
- Personal independence skills – Developing self-care routines such as dressing, eating, and hygiene
- School readiness & independence – Supporting transitions into preschool, primary, or secondary education
- Community skills – Empowering individuals to navigate public spaces, transport, and social settings
- Occupational & workplace skills – Helping individuals develop skills for supported or independent employment

They will conduct a comprehensive assessment to understand the participants behaviour challenges, strengths, triggers, needs and goals through direct observation and interviews with the participant and their family network. From here, your practitioner will write a Behaviour Support Plan to address these needs using a proactive strategy and behaviour intervention. Our practitioner will then provide training to your family, therapy team and school on how to implement the plan. Ongoing support in skill development is available. Our team constantly monitors and evaluates progress by collecting data and tracking analysis.

Behavioural Support FAQs
What is behaviour support and who can it help?
Behaviour support is an evidence-based, person-centred approach to understanding why behaviours occur and creating strategies to improve quality of life, independence, and participation in everyday environments. It can benefit people of all ages — from children and teenagers to adults and older adults — who experience behaviours of concern or want to build stronger life skills.
How does behaviour support work?
Our Behaviour Support Practitioners begin with a comprehensive assessment to understand each person’s strengths, goals, environment, triggers, and the function of behaviours.
Using this information, we develop an individualised Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) that includes practical, evidence-based strategies to:
✔ reduce behaviours of concern
✔ teach new skills (e.g. emotional regulation, communication, independence)
✔ improve confidence, wellbeing, and quality of life
✔ support participation at home, school, work, and in the community
Intervention and ongoing support are then provided through regular sessions, coaching for families and support workers, and review of progress data to ensure strategies are effective and adjusted as needs change.
What is a Behaviour Support Plan (BSP)?
A BSP is a tailored guide developed by a qualified practitioner that outlines practical, respectful strategies and supports based on your unique needs. It includes proactive supports, skill-building techniques, and environmental modifications to increase positive behaviours and safety.
Do I need a diagnosis to access behaviour support?
If you are already accessing the NDIS due to a developmental delay or diagnosis, there is no specific diagnosis that is required to access additional funding for behaviour support through the NDIS. Access is based on the functional impact of behaviours and your assessed support needs, rather than diagnosis alone.
How many hours per week of therapy is needed?
Some children benefit from higher-intensity programs; others do best with fewer direct hours plus strong parent coaching and practice in daily routines.
Research suggests higher intensity can support faster progress for some children, but we balance this with your child’s tolerance, family capacity and values, and NDIS funding.
What age groups do you work with?
We provide behavioural intervention services to children aged as young as 2 through adolescence and into adulthood.
Can a parent or caregiver be involved in the participant's program implementation and treatment decisions?
Parents or caregivers play a necessary and vital role. Being actively engaged in the process is key to consistency and ultimately success. We also offer Parent Coaching and work closely with parents and other key stakeholders to contribute to the participant’s success.
Who can benefit from Behavioural Intervention?
We see participants with a range of developmental delays including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD’s), global developmental delay, intellectual disability, and those with delays across specific areas of development such as speech, social or motor skills.
Where can behaviour support be delivered?
Support can take place in a variety of settings, including:
– home
– school or workplace
– community settings
– telehealth sessions (where appropriate)
What can Behavioural Intervention help with?
Behavioural intervention uses evidence-based strategies informed by Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and trauma-informed and neuro-affirming practice, and other evidence-based approaches. Our work focuses on understanding the purpose of behaviour, building meaningful skills, strengthening relationships, and reducing barriers so individuals can participate more fully in daily life.
How long does it take to complete a Behaviour Support Plan?
Timeframes vary depending on complexity and assessment requirements. Plans are completed in line with NDIS guidelines.
What happens after a Behaviour Support Plan is written?
Once a plan is completed, support focuses on implementation through direct intervention, coaching, and ongoing review.
Is behaviour support just a report, or do you provide intervention?
Behaviour support includes both written plans and ongoing intervention, coaching, and monitoring to support meaningful change.
How many hours of behaviour support are typically recommended?
Support hours are individualised and based on assessed needs, goals, and complexity.
What NDIS funding categories is behaviour support claimed under?
Behaviour support is typically claimed under Capacity Building – Improved Relationships or relevant Core supports.
What if I don’t have behaviour support funding but I need it?
We can provide assessments and reports to support funding requests or plan reviews and guide next steps with your support coordinator.
