Applied Behaviour Analysis Explained

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA): Building Social Skills for Children with Autism

Supporting children as they grow and learn is essential—especially when it comes to developing the skills they need to thrive. For children with autism and other developmental disabilities, social, communication, and behaviour skills often develop more slowly than for neurotypical children. In some cases, these skills may not develop at all without individualised support.

That’s why early, targeted help matters. With the right guidance, children can strengthen their ability to connect with others, become more independent, and feel confident in daily life. Families also benefit, experiencing greater inclusion and overall quality of life.

Why Early Intervention Matters

The earlier we support a child’s development, the better the outcomes. Early childhood intervention—especially through evidence-based approaches like Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)—helps children develop key life skills and reach developmental milestones before developmental gaps widen.

At Freedom Therapy Services, our Behavioural Intervention Programs are grounded in ABA principles. We design our sessions to be fun, engaging, and structured so that children make meaningful progress while enjoying the learning process.

What Is Applied Behaviour Analysis?

ABA is a scientific, evidence-based approach that helps children learn new behaviours by examining how learning and the environment influence behaviour. Therapists use a range of strategies to teach essential skills such as:

  • Social interaction and play

  • Language and communication

  • Daily living and self-care

  • Fine and gross motor development

The primary goal is to increase behaviours that are meaningful and helpful to the child while reducing behaviours that are unsafe or disruptive to learning.

ABA also focuses on teaching these skills in various environments—at home, in school, or within the community—to ensure children can apply what they learn across settings.

How ABA Therapy Works

ABA is a flexible approach that can be adapted to meet each child’s needs. It may be delivered one-on-one or in a group and can take place at home, in a clinic, school, or community setting.

Here are three key techniques used in ABA:

Positive reinforcement
When a child engages in a helpful behaviour—such as asking for help—they receive a reward. This increases the likelihood the behaviour will occur again.

Breaking down skills (task analysis)
Complex behaviours like conversation or problem-solving are broken into smaller steps. For example, children might first learn to say “hi,” then answer a question, and eventually build a full conversation. This process builds confidence at every stage.

Environmental supports
We adjust the environment using tools like visual aids, prompts, and child-preferred items. As children build skills, these supports are gradually removed to promote independence.

These strategies help children learn how to take turns, express their needs, share, play with others, and engage more successfully with the world around them.

Benefits of ABA for Children with Autism

When provided with empathy and individualisation, ABA therapy can lead to significant growth across many areas of a child’s life. These include:

  • Developing social and play skills

  • Improving communication and emotional regulation

  • Gaining independence with daily tasks

  • Reducing behaviours such as aggression, inattention, or elopement

  • Building confidence in unfamiliar situations

At Freedom Therapy Services, we don’t use ABA to change who a child is. We focus on behaviours that make the child’s life easier, safer, and more fulfilling—based on their goals and your family’s values. For example, learning to use the toilet or asking someone to play a favourite game are goals that promote quality of life, not conformity to social expectations.

What Does an ABA Therapist Do?

Our ABA therapists begin by learning about your child’s unique strengths, challenges, and interests. Together with you, we set clear goals and adjust them as your child grows and progresses.

In each session, we use play-based learning—games, storytelling, role-play, and interactive activities—to teach real-world skills. These sessions are designed to feel enjoyable and build connection while still being guided by clear, evidence-based strategies.

Is ABA Therapy Right for Your Child?

If your child has a developmental delay or disability and is facing challenges with social skills, communication, emotional regulation, or daily living tasks, ABA therapy may be a strong fit.

Every program at Freedom Therapy Services is individually designed. We tailor the therapy to match your child’s learning style, interests, and goals—whether that involves making friends, managing emotions, or becoming more independent at home and in the community.
