Why Early Behavioural Support Matters
Behaviours of concern in children can leave parents feeling overwhelmed — especially when these behaviours go beyond typical tantrums or defiance. If your child frequently argues, disobeys, or shows aggression, they may be displaying signs of Behaviour Disorders, such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) or Conduct Disorder (CD). These conditions can significantly affect a child’s ability to thrive — not only at home but also in school and social settings.
Because early identification is key, the right support at the right time can make a lasting difference. That’s why Freedom Therapy Services offers Psychology and Behaviour Support for NDIS participants, including Early Intervention and Specialist Behaviour Support services to help families manage and respond to complex behaviours.
What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)?
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a childhood behavioural condition marked by ongoing disobedience, defiance, and hostility towards authority figures. It affects around 1 in 10 children under the age of 12 — and boys are diagnosed twice as often as girls.
Key Signs of ODD in Children:
-
Frequent temper tantrums and angry outbursts
-
Arguing regularly with parents, teachers, or caregivers
-
Defying rules and refusing reasonable requests
-
Blaming others for their own behaviour or mistakes
-
Low frustration tolerance and poor self-esteem
-
Seeming to provoke or annoy others on purpose
ODD is part of a group of disruptive behaviour disorders, which also includes Conduct Disorder (CD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). If left untreated, ODD can escalate — so children may develop more severe behaviour disorders over time.
What is Conduct Disorder (CD)?
Conduct Disorder (CD) is a more severe condition than ODD. It involves a consistent pattern of aggressive, harmful, or rule-breaking behaviours that violate the rights of others or societal expectations. These behaviours are not isolated — they usually persist for 6 to 12 months and are often complex to manage.
Typical Behaviours Associated with CD:
-
Lying and manipulative behaviour
-
Physical or sexual aggression
-
Cruelty to animals or people
-
Deliberately damaging property or starting fires
-
Repeated stealing or vandalism
Children with CD often require both psychological therapy and specialist behaviour support, especially if they also have emotional or developmental concerns.
